The bird observatory (or bird hide) at Cooney Reserve in Omokoroa, was constructed by the Omokoroa Menzshed, as a joint project with OEMI.
The observatory offers a dedicated, free, all-weather facility for observing diverse birdlife in the inner Tauranga Harbour.
Opened in late 2024, the 19 sqm structure provides viewing portals for watching species like migratory godwits, pied oystercatchers, and dotterels, alongside interpretive signage.
All the pictures of the birds on the walls of the hide were taken by local photographers in and around the hide.
