Two members of the Bird Group, Chrissy & Evie, were concerned about the rapidity with which orchards and shelter belts in Ōmokoroa were being replaced with suburbia.
They decided that some 'empty' Counci land would be a good place to plant some trees. But life is never that simple; the land was a stormwater reserve with undergroudn services and an overland flow-path. After many meetings and negotiations with Council Utilities staff, six locations were approved and marked out by Council staff.
Then the neighbours, the Lions Club and OEMI volunteers created the garden beds and planted the trees and understory cover and shovelled mulch to protect the new planting.
All the plants were funded by donations from the Omokoroa Lions Club and a generous local.
